Halloween Portrait Contest Winner - Illustration By Sam Spratt

The winner of my Zombie contest, Mike, turned out to be an illustrator himself and I felt it would be nice to wiggle that in somewhere — so after I had done the base sketch, I had him create a line dra
wing in his adorably awesome cartoon style in the same pose, then made it into his t-shirt. HERE is the original sketch of mine with his quick line-drawing mocked-up on top of it.

Sam Spratt’s Halloween Portrait Contest!

In brief: Likes and Reblogs of this image are each entries in the contest to win a portrait of you drawn by me.

In slightly less brief:  To those new to this, that means that should you be the random winner, I would draw a portrait of your beautiful face (or someone’s face you care about)… as a horrifically ugly, flesh-eating, undead walker-face. It’s like winning the lottery! (except not at all like that…) That said, it is the best emotional preparation possible should you fall victim to the zombie apocalypse and run (walk slowly) across a mirror in the wreckage of your once beautiful town. (I will also draw you as anything halloween/horror themed, but the undead are a favorite).

Doing each of the following counts as an entry:

Facebook: Comment and/or Share this image >HERE<

Tumblr: Like and/or Reblog this image

Twitter: Following @samspratt and tweeting “Entering to win a portrait of myself drawn as the undead by @samspratt ! http://on.fb.me/RPNehj

Contest closes on Sunday Oct. 28th at midnight EST

PS Yes, that’s a drawing of The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes as a Walker

Beauty/Decay Study - by Sam Spratt

This was a test I did with the female portrait contest winner to mentally differentiate opposite states of beauty/decay and ultimately assist to strike a balance when I painted the real portrait. When I do preliminary work (which is rare)—it’s almost always to try to understand something—rather than to create a rough draft.

"Vanity" - Portrait Painting by Sam Spratt

Jocelyn, the female winner of my portrait contest, wanted to be Zombified and brought somewhere into the 1920’s-1950’s. I actually colored her originally with very pastel/flat tones to create something of a vintage illustrated advertisement—but found her appearance too classy/dark to be an advertisement—even ironically so. As a result, I went back into the black and white and started reworking my painting to be a bit more photographic in feel.

I was going over my work to select pieces for my next website and I found the portrait I did for Gizmodo’s Halloween Portrait Contest I ran last year. Since this was before my discovery of tumblr I wanted to share it with all of you.
